Taverna Nights…..Where have you gone?

Posted on by Evangelos Karapanagiotides // 2 Comments

Seriously. What happened? Are we becoming a people who forgot what our culture is all about? Are we going soft? Have we replaced taverna nights at festivals with a CD thats called Greece’s Greatest Hits from 1972, that only plays Milo Mou Kokino on repeat? We have gone soft folks and I am not happy about this. It’s unfortunate to say, but the time has come where the Taverna Nights at the festivals have become extinct.

For those who don’t know what Taverna Nights were then let me explain to you. Taverna Nights would usually be on the Saturday night of whatever festival you would be attending. From there everyone would flock to the festival and a huge event would occur, consisting of food, drink, dance and music. Small halls would be packed to capacity and the entire community would be there. I was lucky enough to have experienced this, but for others who are not as fortunate, you are truly missing out.

1 Frappe. Metrio. Xoris Gala – The battle for a Greek Café in Philly

Posted on by Evangelos Karapanagiotides // 3 Comments

Glyko me gala – Metrio me gala – Metrio – Sketo dilitrio – Fredo – Freduccino. The list, endless. Time, limited. Growing up as a Greek American, I am torn in two. I say this because given our current status in the world as a people who are all of a sudden labeled as Europe’s welfare line, it’s hard to let people know who we really are; a hard working and proud people. On the other hand, the secondary Greek side comes out; we love to party, but we love relaxation even more! Which after the last 89 words you’re probably still wondering what I am ranting about. My answer, cafeteries.

What’s my point? I love them. What’s my problem? We don’t have any in Philadelphia!!!! To get an idea, let me begin with a list so you can begin to understand why we should….NO…. must have one establishment built in Philadelphia to accommodate my needs (which needless to say is the voice of the majority in this particular situation)!

RETSINA MALAMATINA and The Most Interesting Man in the World

Posted on by Evangelos Karapanagiotides // 9 Comments

That’s right folks. I am about to do something that I’ll probably regret. But for entertainment’s sake I’ll do it anyway; cause that’s how much I love you guys! This week’s blog is dedicated to all of those out there who have a hankering, an affection, and a love for Greece’s unfortunately second most popular alcoholic beverage….RETSINA…. more specifically, RETSINA MALAMATINA. (Kids, if you are not of age to consume alcohol, then don’t. – Now I’ve covered Cosmos Philly’s liability clause ;) ) For most of you who know about it and have tasted its wonderful nectars, you know that it’s more of a love hate relationship. You love to drink it, but you hate yourself the next morning. (**Please see below Facebook status update**)

Dimitris Mitropanos – Atleast Death can Learn Zeimbekiko

Posted on by Evangelos Karapanagiotides // 2 Comments

I awoke Wednesday morning to find out unexpected news. I must even admit, there were tears that came to my eyes, as I read the Greek news in disbelief. A morning that I will never forget, April 17, 2012, the world lost one its greatest talents and human beings in general. Dimitris Mitropanos, or as all of my friends and parea like to call him, Theo Mitso, passed away after suffering a heart attack caused by a pulmonary edema. He was an influence to generations of Greeks around the world. His voice and songs gave hope, comfort and solace for a people, who at most times, consistently had to cope with harsh surroundings. The world will never experience such character, talent and for lack of a better word in English, Mangia.

I know my blogs are usually up beat and quarky. Today will not be like that. We lost a legend and an idol today, April 17, 2012. I will write pieces throughout the week talking about his music, life and career, as he influenced and entertained generations of Greeks all over the world. Mitropanos, like no other entertainer, was the most prolific in Greek music in history. He will truly be missed and may he rest in peace.
