May 21, 2012. Golf is a game invented by the Scots. That’s right, the Scotts. The origins of golf are unclear and much debated. However, it is generally accepted that modern golf evolved in Scotland during the Middle Ages. But we Greeks love the game as well. Every year across North America, Greek organizations such as the Ahepa and YAL and local Greek Orthodox Churches sponsor these outings.
St. Lukes Greek Orthodox church in Broomall is known to hold the big one here in Delaware Valley. For Greeks it’s the one show that the guys don’t like to miss. For 26 years now, in May, the Annual St. Luke Golf Classic takes place. Some 20 teams of 4 individuals team up and make a day of it. Even the ladies get involved and they actually looked pretty good.
For the last few years, the event is has been hosted at the prestigious Fieldstone Golf Club. Nestled in northern Delaware’s rolling green hills, this annual event benefits the youth at St. Lukes Greek Orthodox Church.
Following an 18 hole day, the golfers gathered back at Fieldstone main building. Following dinner, a silent auction, raffle and awards ceremony took place for the winners, sponsors and friends.
