Upper Darby, PA – They rolled, stretched and layered. When they were done, tray after tray of Spanakopita was prepared for the big event Tsipourovrathia.

The Society of Epirotes of Philadelphia “Omonia” will host this annual affair at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church in Upper Darby, on February 14, 2015. Epirotes and fellow Hellenes from around the Delaware Valley will come to eat dance and listen to the music. That’s what Greek dances are based on at face value. The annual event is a night that takes a lot of work, dedication and a little play behind the scenes, weeks, sometimes months before the big night.

Last Sunday, some of the members showed up early to do, what they have been doing for years, enjoy the comradery of their fellow Epirotes. Over a drink, meal and an afternoon of cheer (sipping on tsipouro), the ladies of this organization and a few of the gents, made from scratch, one of the mezes – spanakopita.

Hand made doe, mixed with a lot of love and tradition, they promise to be served hot and as original as the members are. For hours they stood side by side in the kitchen. It was nothing like a factory assembly line of workers. Each one, had their own ideas and thoughts about the famed Greek food. A little of this, a little more of that, tastes varied. But, when it came to getting the job done, and they did – it was perfect.

My advice, is to get there early and try it for yourself. And if you can, thank the ladies in person. They keep our traditions alive.
