Wilmington, DE – The Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral is well underway, and this year’s turnout confirms what many already knew: it’s one of the most beloved gatherings in the area. With perfect weather and a lively atmosphere, guests have been enjoying homemade dishes, traditional music, and the company of friends new and old.
Nikos Dimourtzidis, a board member at Holy Trinity, shared his appreciation for everyone who makes the festival possible—from the volunteers who prepare the food to the guests who return each year. “People wait in line for a gyro, drink in hand, and they’re happier when they reach the front than when they started. That tells you something.”
Food is at the heart of the festival. Parishioners, many of whom have been volunteering for decades, prepare the meals on-site using family recipes. Loukoumades, still hot from the fryer, are served with syrup and cinnamon—nothing extra. “Old school only,” said one of the ladies at the station. Downstairs in the church hall, visitors find other homemade dishes, like orzo with chicken and stuffed peppers.
Some guests have been coming for decades. Others are first-timers, including a group of friends from Scotland, Luxembourg, and the Channel Islands, who made the visit thanks to a colleague in Delaware. “We’ve never been to something like this,” one of them said. “It’s amazing.”
For Pam and Jeff Siemens, the festival is a tradition. Though they now live in Sussex County, they return every year. “The chicken, the kritharaki, the green beans—it’s all excellent,” said Jeff. Pam added that she always makes sure to get the moussaka and grape leaves.
Live music fills the grounds each evening, and folk dancers in traditional costume perform for the crowd. Many join in the dancing. Others simply sit back with a glass of wine or beer and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s a relaxed space, and people from all over—Delaware, South Jersey, Pennsylvania, even further—feel welcome here.
Father Christoforos Oikonomidis, the parish priest of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, thanked the volunteers who’ve worked year-round to bring the event to life. “This is the result of years of effort,” he said. “Everything you see, everything you taste, is made by people who care deeply about this community.”
The festival runs through Saturday night. With three days remaining, there’s still time to stop by—whether for lunch on a break from work or an evening of food and music with friends.
