The Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia has recently revealed the availability of undergraduate scholarships for the 2023-2024 academic year. These scholarships are open to students of Greek descent or declared majors in Greek Studies. If you meet these criteria and are interested in applying for a scholarship, the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia would like to hear from you.

Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a degree program at an accredited four-year college or university. They must be high school seniors accepted for enrollment in such a degree program and have outstanding academic qualifications. Please note that some scholarships have special eligibility requirements.

Scholarships that require demonstrated financial need

Dr. Michael Dorizas Memorial Scholarship: $5,000 in honor of the late Dr. Michael Dorizas, a widely respected educator, lecturer, and athlete.
Founders Scholarship: $5,000 award in honor of the founders of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia.

Dimitri J. Ververelli Memorial Scholarship for Architecture and/or Engineering: $3,000 for a qualified student pursuing a degree in the field of Architecture or Engineering. Established by Mrs. Anastasia Ververelli in memory of her husband, Dimitri J. Ververelli, a past president of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia.

George C. Liacouras Memorial Scholarship: $5,000 for a qualified undergraduate student at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Established by Mrs. Effie Liacouras in memory of her husband, George C. Liacouras.

Theresa A. Chletcos Memorial Scholarship: $2,000 for a qualified student pursuing an undergraduate degree in education. It was established in 2013 in honor of the past president and founding member Theresa A. Chletcos. This scholarship was funded through an endowment of Theresa A. Chletcos and her friends and family.

Goldie S. Vastardis Memorial Scholarship: $2,000 merit scholarship funded by a grant from Mr. Louis Vastardis in memory of his wife. This scholarship is awarded to a student whose parents are stewards in good standing of St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church in Broomall, Pennsylvania.

Scholarships that do not require any financial information

The Paideia Scholarship: This is a merit-based scholarship awarded to a student who is the child of a current member in good standing of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia. To be eligible, the parent(s) must have been members for at least three years. The scholarship amount is $5,000.

The Cyprus Society Scholarship: This scholarship is offered by the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia to a student whose family has been members in good standing of the Cyprus Society for the past three years. The scholarship amount is $2,500.

Scholarships for Graduate Students

Individuals eligible to apply for the scholarship must either be full-time graduate students at an accredited university or professional school or senior undergraduates who have been accepted to a graduate program. They should have the intention of enrolling full-time in Fall 2023. Postdocs who have already obtained their Ph.D. are not eligible to apply. It’s essential to keep in mind that some scholarships may have specific eligibility criteria that must be met.

Scholarships that require demonstrated financial need

John S. Manos, Esq. Memorial Graduate Scholarship: $2,000 for a student pursuing a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. Established in 2009, this scholarship honors the late Philadelphia lawyer and long-time Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia member, John Stanley Manos, Esq. It is funded by Manos’ family and friends.

Dr. Peter A. Theodos Memorial Graduate Scholarship: $1,500 for a student pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Established in 1988, this scholarship honors the late Philadelphia physician, past president, and founding member of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia, Dr. Peter A. Theodos. It is funded by Mrs. Peter A. Theodos.

Nicholas S. Hetos, DDS, and Maria Galanos Hetos, EdD, Memorial Graduate Scholarship: $5,000 for a senior undergraduate or graduate student of Greek descent with financial need pursuing studies leading to either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, or to a dentist pursuing studies leading to a graduate/post-doctoral degree in dental specialty certification, or pursuing studies leading to a graduate degree in education or education-related fields. This scholarship honors the late Philadelphia dentist, past president, and founding member of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia, Dr. Nicholas S. Hetos, and Maria G. Hetos, EdD, an educator and past president of the Club. It is funded by their daughters, Catherine Hetos Skefos and Stephanie Hetos Cocke.

Kathleen and Nicholas Fisfis Graduate Scholarship: $10,000 for a student pursuing a graduate or post-graduate degree in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Medicine. Established in 2016, this scholarship is funded by Kathleen and Nicholas Fisfis.

Scholarships that do not require any financial information

The Dr. Nicholas Padis Memorial Graduate Scholarship: An annual award of $5,000 that recognizes academic excellence above all else. Established in honor of Dr. Nicholas Padis, a Philadelphia physician and founding member of the Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia, this scholarship has been supporting outstanding graduate students since 1986.

Scholarships for Undergraduate or Graduate Students

Scholarships are available for those pursuing an advanced degree as well as those still in college. The prerequisites for each student category are as described above.

Chios Society of Philadelphia “Koraes” Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students of Chian descent and honors the memory of past and present leaders and members of the Chios Society of Philadelphia. The award amount is $3,000 and no financial information is required to apply.

Nicholas L. Gianopulos and Antoinette Manos Gianopulos Scholarship:  Established in 2019, this annual scholarship is available to qualified students pursuing degrees in civil engineering, architecture, or fine arts. The award amount is $5,000 and preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate financial need. This scholarship is funded by Antoinette Gianopulos, friends, and family in memory of Nicholas Gianopulos.

Eleftheria Scholarship of the Philadelphia VFW Post 6633: This scholarship is available to children and descendants of the VFW Eleftheria Post 6633 of Philadelphia. The scholarship recognizes the contributions of VFW members to our society, particularly in the Philadelphia community. Qualified candidates must demonstrate good academic standing and evidence of ancestry. The scholarship is for undergraduate or graduate studies, and no residency requirements apply. The total annual award is $5,000, which may be shared between two equally qualified candidates. Applicants are not required to provide financial information. Prospective students who receive the scholarship may apply again after two years.

How do apply

Undergraduate Scholarships

To determine your eligibility for scholarships, please visit https://hucphiladelphia.org/undergraduate-application/ and complete the Undergraduate Application provided on the same website. After filling out the application, you will need to submit several documents to hucscholarships@gmail.com, including academic transcripts, standardized test scores, and one letter of recommendation.

Additionally, you will need to write an essay (with an additional essay required for the Chios Society scholarship) and provide the first page of your FAFSA Student Aid Report if the scholarship requires demonstrated financial need. You should also include a financial package letter from your university if available, which details the scholarships offered to you and the true cost of tuition. Please consult the application for more specific instructions.

Graduate Scholarships

To apply for a graduate scholarship, first, you need to check your eligibility status by visiting https://hucphiladelphia.org/graduate-application/. If you are eligible, complete the Graduate Application on the same site. Then, send the following documents to hucscholarships@gmail.com, following the instructions in the application: academic transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (undergraduate and graduate), resume, two letters of recommendation, an essay (Chios Society scholarship requires an additional essay), and Page 1 of FAFSA Student Aid Report (for scholarships with financial need requirements) and financial package letter (with offered scholarships and true tuition cost) from the University, if available.

Who is Eligible

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants (both graduate and undergraduate) must be of Greek descent and U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents of the following counties: Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton or Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania; Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean or Salem Counties in New Jersey; or New Castle County in Delaware. However, if students are declared majors in Greek Studies, they may apply regardless of their heritage. Graduate students can use their school address as their permanent address, provided they submit taxes on their own. Residency requirements do not apply to Eleftheria Scholarship applicants.
