For generations, Greek Orthodox parishes in America have offered language schools as a way to pass down not only words but an entire heritage. At St. Sophia, Ss. Faith, Hope and Agape Greek Orthodox Church of Valley Forge, that tradition continues as the parish prepares to open its 2025–2026 Greek Language School. Classes will begin on Monday, September 15, 2025, for children and on Sunday, September 21, 2025, for adults. The school year will run through June with breaks at Christmas and during Holy Week.
The program is open to both children and adults, with levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Placement is based on language ability rather than age or grade, so that every student learns at the right pace. Children may begin as early as Kindergarten, and older students are carefully assessed to ensure they join the class that fits their skills. Adults follow a separate program on Sundays, allowing parents and parishioners to share in the same journey of language and culture.
Guiding this work is Mrs. Dimitra Klapakis, who is now in her fourth year leading the program at St. Sophia. Born and raised in Athens, she moved to the United States in 1997 and has been teaching Modern Greek since 2006. Over the years, she has taught in schools in Arizona, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, working with students at every level. Her teaching is rooted in a love for language, but it also brings in the richness of culture, tradition, and teamwork. She believes that learning Greek is not only about speaking a language but also about discovering stories, history, and a sense of belonging.
In her classroom, students learn to read, write, and converse in Greek, but they also develop confidence and pride in their heritage. The lessons weave together grammar, vocabulary, and conversation with songs, myths, and cultural traditions. For Mrs. Klapakis, the real goal is to give students the tools to carry their identity forward and to build a bridge to the country their parents and grandparents once called home.
