This Sunday, September 7, at 10 AM, Saint Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill will celebrate the first Divine Liturgy of its new Proistamenos, Father Georgios Oikonomou. Cosmos Philly will stream the service live for those unable to attend in person.
The day also carries liturgical significance. It is the Sunday before the Holy Cross (Κυριακή προ της Υψώσεως), when the faithful reflect on the mystery and power of the Cross in preparation for the Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross.
Father Georgios officially began his ministry at Saint Thomas on September 1, following his reassignment from Saint Nicholas in Baltimore. Originally from Thessaloniki, he brings nearly two decades of service to the parish, with a background in youth work, catechesis, and theological scholarship. Together with his wife Anastasia and their five children, Ioannis, Styliani, Grigorios, Arsenios, and Loukas, he now begins this new chapter in Cherry Hill.
For the parish, the day is both historic and deeply personal. The first liturgy of a new priest is not just an administrative transition but the start of a spiritual relationship between shepherd and flock. Parishioners are invited to be part of this milestone in person or through the livestream.
