On August 27, 2025, the Presidential Palace in Nicosia hosted a reception for the World Conference of the Cyprus Diaspora. President Nikos Christodoulides honored eight distinguished members of the community with what he described as “the highest honour” of the Republic of Cyprus. Among them was Andreas Kyprianides, Honorary Consul General of Cyprus in Los Angeles, recognized for his long-standing contributions to the Cypriot community abroad.
President Christodoulides praised the awardees for their “virtue, dedication and lasting contribution to the common good.” His words underscored the national significance of the event and the depth of service provided by those honored.
Kyprianides has served as Honorary Consul General in Los Angeles for over four decades. His consular office on Coolidge Avenue has provided assistance to Cypriot citizens, supported families and students, and acted as a bridge between the diaspora and the homeland.
In addition to his official role, Kyprianides is a founding leader of the American Hellenic Council of California. Under his leadership, the Council has become one of the most active organizations in the United States advocating for Hellenic and Cypriot issues. It has organized community conferences, built connections with members of Congress, and coordinated campaigns to raise awareness about Cyprus in American political life. The Council also serves as a cultural hub, supporting events that promote Cypriot heritage to younger generations of Greek and Cypriot Americans.
Kyprianides’s work has also extended into public forums and cultural life in Southern California. He has taken part in film festivals and commemorative events, lending his support to initiatives that present Cyprus’s history and culture to a wider audience. On several occasions, he has spoken out on legal and political issues connected to Cyprus, emphasizing the importance of accuracy and fairness in international discussions. These efforts reflect his view that the role of an honorary consul is not only diplomatic but also civic and cultural.
In accepting the honour in Nicosia, Kyprianides thanked the president and noted that recognition from the homeland carried special significance. He expressed his ongoing commitment to supporting efforts for a resolution of the Cyprus problem and to continuing his service to the diaspora.
The ceremony also recognized seven other members of the diaspora: Nikos Tziasas, George Giakoumis, Kyriakos Akathiotis, Athena Charalambidou, Nestor Nestoros, Andreas Savvas Demetriou, and posthumously, Christina Charalambous. Their contributions reflected the diversity of diaspora service, ranging from cultural preservation and education to humanitarian outreach.
For the Cypriot community in Southern California, the honour for Andreas Kyprianides affirmed the impact of more than forty years of service. His leadership has given Cyprus a consistent presence in California and ensured that the concerns of the community remain part of the broader conversation.
