Between June 30 and July 25, 2025, the sound of bouncing basketballs mixed with laughter and shouts of encouragement at the Leonteios School in Patissia, Athens. But the drills were only part of the story. For the children who gathered there, ages 10 to 17, the lessons went beyond layups and defense. They were about teamwork, resilience, and the belief that their future could be shaped by effort and support.
This was the Summer Youth Academy, a program of The Hellenic Initiative (THI) that blends sports with mentorship and life skills. Participation is free for underprivileged youth, and over 100 children joined the inaugural 2024 session. In 2025, the program expanded to two sessions, reaching a similar number of participants.
Basketball provided the common ground, but the true aim was personal growth. Alongside training sessions, the children took part in workshops on leadership, communication, and responsibility. They met professionals who shared their own experiences, showing that success can take many forms and that perseverance matters as much as talent.
The Academy’s credibility rests on strong partnerships. It works closely with Eurohoops and basketball legend Theodoros (Theo) Papaloukas, former captain of Greece’s men’s national basketball team, combining professional expertise with THI’s diaspora support. The 2024 program was chaired by Ted Leonsis, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and sports team owner, who served as presenting sponsor. This year’s Chairman was THI Board member Nikos Stathopoulos.
What makes the Academy distinctive is the involvement of THI’s New Leaders network, a global community of young professionals of Hellenic descent. In July 2025, members of this community traveled to Athens to work directly with the children.
They ran mentorship sessions, spoke about their careers, and offered advice on navigating challenges both in school and in life. For the participants, hearing from someone only a few years older who had already built a career in law, technology, or business made the lessons feel real and attainable. For the mentors, it was a chance to give back in a personal way, connecting with the next generation not through speeches but through conversation.
Sports have long been a way to instill values such as discipline, respect, and cooperation. At the Academy, those ideals were clearly in play. Layered on top were lessons about confidence and vision. Many of the children spoke of leaving the program not only as better players but as more determined individuals.
The closing ceremony captured that spirit. Parents, coaches, and mentors filled the stands as the participants played their final game. Applause echoed, but the sense of pride went beyond the scoreboard. “The Academy is about much more than basketball. It is about instilling values, building confidence, and giving these young people a sense of hope for the future,” said George P. Stamas, THI Board President, in remarks at the closing ceremony. One participant added, “I feel more confident after this summer. I learned not just basketball, but how to believe in myself.”
The Academy had given them more than just summer memories. It had given them a glimpse of what they could become.
The Summer Youth Academy is one of several ways THI is investing in Greece’s future. Founded in 2012, THI is the only global non-profit organization that unites Greeks around the world through philanthropy by investing in the future of Greece. Since its founding, THI has raised more than $38 million and has grown to be the largest Greek Diaspora organization in the world.
By pairing local community energy with the experience of the diaspora, THI creates opportunities that simply would not exist otherwise. The impact may be hard to measure in statistics alone, but it is evident in the faces of the young people who walk away believing in themselves just a little more.
For the diaspora, programs like this reframe what support can look like. It can mean more than donations. It can mean showing up, sharing knowledge, and being present for the next generation. That is how roots are laid for a stronger tomorrow.
