George Hionis passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025, at the age of 95, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.
He was born on May 7, 1930, on the island of Kefalonia, the son of Gerasimos and Peristera Hionis. Like so many of his generation, George left Greece with little more than determination and hope. He stepped off the ship at Ellis Island and set out to build a life in America, a life shaped by hard work and quiet generosity.
For many years he worked as a high-elevation bridge painter, a job that demanded courage and steady hands. In the early 1960s he turned his energy to business, opening a neighborhood beer and beverage shop that became a local gathering place and earned him the respect of customers and friends.
Away from work, George found joy in the open fields. He was an avid pheasant hunter who loved nothing more than sharing the day’s game with family, neighbors and friends. Visits with relatives were precious to him, and his kindness was constant, whether offering his own lunch to someone in need or simply being the first to lend a hand.
George leaves behind his beloved wife of 68 years, Irene, and their son, Dr. Jerry Hionis. He was preceded in death by his brother Nikolaos and his sister Aikaterini (Hionis) Mellis.
Family and friends paid their respects on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Media. The morning began with a viewing, followed by the funeral service and interment at Chester Rural Cemetery.
Those who knew him remember a man whose life was full and whose heart was open. May his memory be eternal.
