Steve Statis, 72, of Hamilton Township, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton Township.
Born in Rhodes, Greece, Steve grew up surrounded by the values of family, friendship, and hard work that would define his life. Known for his talent on the soccer field and his lifelong enthusiasm for horse racing, Steve brought energy and passion to everything he loved.
After earning his certification from the New York School of Dry Cleaning, Steve joined his father, John, a tailor, at their shop in Clover Mall, Mercerville. Their success came not only from skill but from their warmth and kindness toward every customer who walked through the door.
Those who knew Steve best remember him as a true people person. He and his family helped run Van’s Freehold Inn, later known as South Gate Manor, a beloved gathering place known for its warm atmosphere, good food, and sense of community. Later in life, Steve managed several diners across New Jersey, his last being the Flemington Raritan Diner, where he continued to greet guests with the same friendly smile and conversation that defined his character.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, John and Vasilia (Fotinos) Statis. He is survived by his fiancée, Mary Ann Spair; his daughter, Vasilia (Vicky) Statis; his sister, Kitsa Manolas, and her husband George; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will remember him with love.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1200 Klockner Road, Hamilton, NJ. Funeral services will follow at 10:00 a.m., with burial at Fountain Lawn Memorial Park in Ewing Township.
