On November 12, 2025, Peter J. Eleutheriou passed away at 87, closing a long chapter of service, hard work, and community spirit. He touched many lives, from the counter at John’s Doggie Shop to the churches, schools, and neighborhoods he supported.
Pete was born in Chester to John and Evangelia “Angie” Eleutheriou. He spent his early childhood in New York before returning home, graduating from Chester High School in 1955. After serving in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, he joined his father at John’s Doggie Shop, the five-stool hot dog stand that opened in 1948 and became a local landmark. Through Pete’s energy, drive, and countless hours of dedication, the small counter grew into a 48-seat restaurant and eventually expanded to five locations across three states, including one franchise. Many in the community remember him behind the counter, always ready with a smile, a kind word, and a story.
Sports were a big part of his life. Pete was a talented basketball player in local Delaware County leagues and proudly supported the Chester High Clippers. He loved helping the program thrive and sponsored summer league camps so that young players could grow and succeed. His love for the Philadelphia Eagles ran deep. He held season tickets for many years and attended the franchise’s first two Super Bowls.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, John and Evangelia “Angie”, and by his beloved wife Kyriaki “Kiki”, who passed in 2013. He is survived by his children, John (Debbie), George, Angie Deligiannides (George), and Stamatia “Tia” Vasilopoulos (Taki). He leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him deep joy.
Known affectionately as Sweet Pete and Hot Dog Pete, he will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and genuine care for people. He treated customers like family and made everyone feel welcome. His legacy lives on in the thousands of small moments he shared with friends, neighbors, and the many people who were touched by his kindness.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 8:30 to 11:30 AM at First Baptist Church of Ogden, 2446 Mill Road in Boothwyn. The Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 PM, followed by interment at Lawn Croft Cemetery.
