Despina Mikedis was born on May 13, 1942, in the village of Mesa Didima on the island of Chios, Greece. In 1967, she traveled to America with her three young children to join her husband, Efthimios, in Washington Heights, New York. Not long after, the family welcomed their fourth child. Like many Chiotes who were beginning new lives in America, they arrived with very little, yet their home was always filled with warmth, hospitality, and an open door for others making the same journey.
The family later settled in Elkins Park, where they became devoted stewards of Annunciation–Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church. Despina’s life was rooted in kindness, generosity, and deep respect for family and tradition. She was a gifted cook, best known for her comforting chicken soup, which she shared freely with anyone who visited. She also found joy in knitting scarves and blankets for her church community, each one made with care and offered from the heart.
Those who knew her remember Despina as a gracious host, a loyal friend, and someone whose warmth made others feel at home. Her passing marks the loss of a woman who gave endlessly to her family, her parish, and everyone blessed to know her.
Despina is survived by her sisters Zymboulia and Zoi; her children Argiro and her spouse Kay, Dimitri, Yani and his spouse Sindey, and Smaragde; her grandchildren Kai Hans and his spouse Danielle, Roxanne and her spouse Mike, Aleczandria and her spouse William, Zachary, Alex, Francisco, Dimitrios, and Antonio; and her great-grandchildren Spiro and Harlyn. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am at Annunciation/Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, 7921 Old York Rd., Elkins Park, PA 19027. Interment will follow at Lawnview Cemetery.
