Students from the St. Demetrios Greek School and Sunday School spent Saturday, December 13, visiting community homes to sing traditional Greek kalanta, or Christmas carols, bringing a familiar holiday sound to neighborhoods throughout the area.
Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the group traveled through local neighborhoods until 5:00 p.m., stopping at homes to sing holiday melodies accompanied by the ringing of triangles. Wearing Santa hats and reindeer antlers, the young carolers were met with smiles, open doors, and the warmth that comes with a tradition many families remember from their own childhoods.
The outing was led by Fr. Alexandros, director of the Greek School, along with Anna Koulas, director of the Sunday School. Families welcomed the group at each stop, offering traditional holiday treats and opening their homes in the spirit of the season. The two-day caroling effort also served as a fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the St. Demetrios Sunday School program.
Transportation for the day was generously provided by parishioner Veronica Lewis Crisp, owner of Step by Step Learning Center, who donated the use of a school bus to support the students’ visits.
By the end of the day, the sound of the kalanta had reached dozens of homes, connecting generations and helping ensure that a cherished Christmas tradition continues through the parish’s youngest members.
