A new historical novel revisiting Greece’s role during World War II is set for release this spring. Island of Ghosts and Dreams, the latest book by author and screenwriter Christopher Cosmos, will be published by Pegasus Books on March 3, 2026.
The novel has already been named a TODAY Best Book of 2026 and has received early praise for bringing renewed attention to the lesser-known story of Greece’s resistance and survival during the war.
A Story Set in Crete During the Nazi Occupation
Set in Chania, Crete, in 1941, Island of Ghosts and Dreams opens as mainland Greece falls to Nazi forces after months of fierce resistance. As the Greek government retreats south to Crete, the island becomes the next target of invasion.
At the center of the novel is Maria, a villager whose husband has been sent to fight with the Greek army. When she discovers a wounded British soldier washed ashore near her home and helps nurse him back to health, her life — and the lives of her family — are irrevocably changed as the German occupation begins.
The novel follows Maria as she is drawn into a role shaped by war, secrecy, and survival, echoing the experiences of generations of Cretans before her. Themes of occupation, betrayal, family loyalty, and sacrifice run through the story, which spans decades and examines how war reshapes both individuals and communities.
Early Critical Response
In a starred early review, Publishers Weekly described the novel as “a stirring drama” that “shines a light on the lesser-told story of Greece’s role in WWII,” highlighting the resilience and courage of its people.
Other early praise has come from a range of contemporary authors, including Liv Constantine, Lori Nelson Spielman, and Natalie Bakopoulos, who noted the novel’s emotional depth, historical detail, and attention to memory and trauma in the Greek landscape.
About the Author
Christopher Cosmos is a bestselling author and screenwriter from the Midwest. He attended the University of Michigan as a recipient of the Chick Evans Scholarship and is also the author of Once We Were Here and Young Conquerors. His screenwriting work has been recognized on the Black List.
Cosmos has been widely praised for his focus on Greek history and identity, particularly in narratives that explore the long-term impact of war, displacement, and inherited memory.
