Young parishioners at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Elkins Park will gather this Friday, February 27, for a Hope & JOY koliva workshop in the church hall.
Families are asked to arrive at 6:15 PM, with the lesson beginning at 6:30 PM. The workshop will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 7921 Old York Rd, Elkins Park, PA 19027.
Participants will learn the meaning of koliva in the Orthodox tradition and take part in preparing and decorating the ceremonial wheat dish used at memorial services and the Saturdays of Souls.
Koliva, made from boiled wheat and covered with powdered sugar and a cross, recalls Christ’s words that a grain must fall into the earth before it bears fruit. Through hands-on participation, children will be introduced to both its symbolism and its place in the life of the Church.
Established in 1901, Annunciation is the sixth oldest Greek Orthodox community in the United States and continues to serve families in Elkins Park and the greater Philadelphia area.
