The Consulate General of Greece in Chicago will mark International Women’s Day with a cultural program dedicated to the life and legacy of Eva Palmer Sikelianos, a remarkable figure who helped connect modern Greece with international artistic and intellectual movements of the early twentieth century.
Titled “Writing Women’s Lives, Looking for Eva Palmer Sikelianos,” the event will take place on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the National Hellenic Museum.
Organized by the Greek Consulate in collaboration with the museum, the program will feature a presentation by Artemis Leontis of the University of Michigan.
Leontis will explore the life and work of Palmer Sikelianos, the American-born writer, performer, and cultural visionary who became deeply involved in Greece’s artistic life after marrying poet Angelos Sikelianos. Together, the couple launched the Delphic Festivals in the late 1920s, an ambitious effort to revive ancient Greek drama, music, and athletic traditions at Delphi while promoting a broader cultural dialogue between Greece and the world.
In addition to the lecture, the evening will include a musical tribute inspired by Palmer Sikelianos’ artistic legacy, highlighting the creative spirit that shaped her work and influence.
The evening is expected to draw members of Chicago’s Greek-American community, along with scholars and cultural supporters, for a conversation about Eva Palmer Sikelianos and the broader role women have played in shaping modern Greek cultural life.
