A sold-out concert by Konstantinos Argiros and a series of fundraising events in Chicago raised more than $1 million for Greece, according to The Hellenic Initiative (THI).
The effort culminated on March 7 at the United Center, where more than 13,000 attendees gathered for the concert, the centerpiece of the weekend’s fundraising activities.
The main evening began with a black-tie dinner hosted by THI Vice Chairman John S. Koudounis in honor of investor and philanthropist John P. Calamos Sr. Calamos received the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Koudounis and THI President George P. Stamas.
The dinner brought together Greek-American leaders, business figures, and supporters of THI. Guests made their way to the arena following the program, where the concert continued the evening’s fundraising effort.
Events began the evening before with a reception hosted by Calamos Investments for sponsors and supporters, marking the start of the weekend’s program.
Speaking to attendees, Koudounis emphasized the purpose behind the gathering.
“I’ve never been more proud to be Greek than I am tonight,” he said. “THI exists to unite Hellenes around the world to invest in Greece’s future and support its people.”
THI President Stamas described the weekend as a strong showing of community participation, pointing to both attendance and fundraising results.
Board member Cathy Sakellaris described the atmosphere inside the arena as one of shared pride across generations, comparing it to the collective emotion seen during the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Funds raised during the weekend will support THI programs in Greece focused on entrepreneurship, job creation, and humanitarian aid. Since its founding, the organization reports more than $10.5 million in humanitarian assistance and over $13.5 million invested in economic development initiatives.
