A lecture in Astoria will bring the history of the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks into focus for a community where that history remains deeply rooted.

The Holy Institution Panagia Soumela Phrontistery will host Dr. Theodosios Ar. Kyriakidis on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the Stathakion Cultural Center in Astoria, New York. The program begins at 7:00 PM.

Kyriakidis is a historian of Pontus whose work draws heavily on Vatican and other Roman Catholic archival sources. He holds a PhD in Modern History from the University of Western Macedonia, and institutional biographies describe his scholarship as spanning the history of Pontus, the Ottoman Empire, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the Vatican. His recent English-language book on the persecution of Christians in the region is based on years of archival research and includes Catholic testimony and papal responses to the violence against Christian populations in the early twentieth century.

The event comes during a period when Pontic organizations and Greek communities in the United States and abroad continue to organize commemorations and educational programs tied to the genocide. In Astoria, where many families trace their roots to the region, these gatherings often serve as both remembrance and reaffirmation of identity.

The Phrontistery regularly hosts lectures and programs focused on Pontic history and culture, bringing scholars into direct conversation with the community.
