Angeliki P. Doulis, whose life carried the handwork, food, and family traditions of Chios into her years in Philadelphia, passed away on May 6, 2026, in Vineland, New Jersey. She was 90.
She was born on March 1, 1936, in Tholopotami, Chios, Greece, to Konstantinos and Markela Vafiadis. After settling in Pennsylvania, Angeliki worked for more than twenty years as a seamstress at Quality Workroom in Philadelphia, a line of work that matched the steady hand and attention to detail remembered by her family.
At home, that same care showed in the things she made by hand. Angeliki knitted and crocheted, often giving her work to newborns and newlyweds. She also loved her garden and used the grapevines she tended for homemade yiaprakia, the stuffed grape leaves that were part of the family table.
Cooking and baking were among the ways Angeliki cared for those around her. She was known for Greek desserts, including sweet breads, koulourakia, finikia, and many others. Her family remembers that she did not need recipe cards or cookbooks. The knowledge was carried in her hands, her memory, and the rhythm of years spent cooking for the people she loved.
Angeliki is survived by her son, Peter Doulis, and his wife, Cynthia, her grandchildren, Katina Lampropoulos and her husband, Dionisis, Peter A. Doulis and his wife, Ashley, and Angela Kolokithias and her husband, Stephen. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Marilena and Niko P. Lampropoulos, and Peter G. Doulis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Petros Doulis, her daughter, Maria Doulis-Patterson, her parents, Konstantinos and Markela Vafiadis, and her siblings, George Vafiadis, Katina Kalameniou, Mathew Vafiadis, and John Vafiadis.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 7921 Old York Road, Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at Lawnview Cemetery, 500 Huntingdon Pike, Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.
