The 2026 release returns to music Voukanos first developed for an ERT documentary in 2002, reshaping it as a standalone instrumental album built with synthesizers, electronic instrumentation, and cinematic sound design.
Greek composer George Voukanos has returned to Terra Olympia, a work he first wrote more than two decades ago and has since revisited in both recorded and staged forms.
Released August 14 by Melody Spirit Records, TERRA OLYMPIA is a 12-track instrumental album inspired by Ancient Olympia, Greek mythology, and the wider region of Elis. Track titles include “The Dawn of Elis,” “Sacred Neda,” “The Dance of the Mythical Rivers of Ilia,” “The Sacred Road,” and “Olympic Glory,” according to Voukanos’ official album page.
The music traces back to 2002, when Voukanos composed material for the ERT documentary series Ilia Through the Ages, about the region of Ilia. An earlier Terra Olympia CD also paired his music with texts by Mary Voukanou and vocal performances.
On August 8, 2017, Terra Olympia was presented at the Ancient Theatre of Elis in what the Ancient Elis Festival described as its first nationwide presentation.
Voukanos performed on piano alongside electric guitar, trumpet, and percussion, with soprano Ada Athanasopoulou, narration, dance, and video art by Effie Panagopoulou. Mary Voukanou wrote the texts, Haris Kotsifas directed, and Konstantza Printezi handled the choreography.
The 2026 album, Voukanos said, should not be understood as a recording of that production.
“The 2026 TERRA OLYMPIA album grows from the same artistic world as the earlier stage work, but it should be understood as a new recording and a new sonic interpretation rather than simply a reproduction of the original production,” he told Cosmos Philly.
The 2017 version depended on performers, narration, dance, video, and the setting of the ancient theater. For the new album, Voukanos returned to the material with the music itself at the center.
“I wanted the music to have an independent life beyond the stage,” he said. “I revisited the material and developed it for a purely musical journey, using contemporary electronic and cinematic means.”
Working with synthesizers
Rather than using electronic instruments to simulate an orchestra, Voukanos wanted the synthesizer to shape the character of the recording.
“I wanted to explore the synthesizer as an instrument with its own identity and expressive possibilities,” he said.
The cinematic element, he explained, gives listeners room to form their own images of landscape, ritual, movement, and competition. The compositions draw on Greek mythology and geography without relying primarily on traditional Greek musical forms.
“The Greek identity of TERRA OLYMPIA is present less as a quotation of traditional Greek music and more as the spiritual and narrative foundation of the entire album,” Voukanos said.
Voukanos said the album draws on places and stories associated with Elis and Olympia, including Neda, the rivers of the region, Heracles and the Centaurs of Foloi, the Sacred Road and the sacred olive of Olympia.
Beyond Ancient Olympia
The geography behind TERRA OLYMPIA extends beyond the archaeological site itself. Voukanos has continued to draw from the rivers, forests, ancient routes, myths and monuments of the wider Elis region.
In 2017, that connection was literal. The stage production was presented at the Ancient Theatre of Elis during the August full moon and organized with the Municipality of Elis and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Elis.
Just over nine years later, the new recording gives the project another form, this time without the theater, narration, or visual components that shaped the earlier production.
“My aim was not to create music that says only ‘this is Greece,’ but music that begins in Greece and then travels beyond geographical borders,” Voukanos said.
