The Hellenic Federation of New Jersey will present “The Unconquered Spirit: Greece’s Pivotal Role in World War II” on Friday, October 30, at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Paramus.
The program begins at 7:00 p.m. at the church, 51 Paramus Road. The Federation’s current event listing gives an end time of 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, according to the event flyer, which also notes that seating is limited.
Dr. Evangelos Athanasopoulos and Dr. Panos Stavrianidis will lead the historical portion of the evening, using multimedia presentations to trace Greece’s wartime experience. Live music will be part of the program, with singer Grigoris Maninakis joined by guest vocalists Aggeliki Psoni and Nikitas Tampakis. Glafkos Kontemeniotis will perform on piano and Kostas Psarros on bouzouki.
The presentation is expected to cover the Italian invasion of Greece, the Greek counteroffensive, the defense of the Metaxas Line during the German invasion, and the Axis occupation that followed. Italy invaded Greece from Albania on October 28, 1940. Greek forces pushed the Italian army back before Germany invaded in April 1941. Germany, Italy and Bulgaria subsequently divided occupied Greece into zones.
The timing places the event two days after Ohi Day, the October 28 commemoration of Greece’s refusal of Italy’s 1940 ultimatum and the beginning of the Greco-Italian War.
A version of “The Unconquered Spirit” was presented at the Hellenic Cultural Center in Astoria in October 2025, also combining historical material with live music. The Paramus program brings the format to New Jersey this year.
