Orthodox singers from across the Philadelphia area will gather at Annunciation/Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church in Elkins Park from October 2–4 for the “Draw Near” Choir Workshop, centered on a new setting of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by composer and conductor Alexander Pierce Hill.
The free workshop is part of Annunciation’s 125th anniversary year and is open to Greek Orthodox singers as well as participants from other local Orthodox jurisdictions. Rehearsals of Hill’s liturgical setting will be combined with work on musicianship, choral formation, and vocal development.
Registered singers can prepare in advance using audio resources for individual voice parts and full SATB arrangements. The materials are intended to help participants arrive familiar with their parts so workshop time can focus on ensemble sound and musicianship.
The weekend culminates on Sunday, October 4, when participating singers will offer Hill’s setting during the Divine Liturgy. October 4 is also National Church Music Sunday, when the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America recognizes the work of church musicians throughout the Archdiocese.
Hill’s music can also be heard on Draw Near, his 2026 album performed by the vocal ensemble APOLLO5. Organizers link to the album for participants who want to become familiar with the music before the workshop.
