Society of Epirotes of Philadelphia “Omonia” Holds Vasilopita Cutting Event
The Society of Epirotes of Philadelphia “Omonia,” hosted a Vasilopita cutting event last Sunday at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral Church in Philadelphia. This event was part of the Sunday services that honored St. George of Ioannina, the patron saint of Ioannina in Epirus, Greece.
During the service, Father Costa Christo blessed the Vasilopita and talked about the history of St. George. He also carried a replica icon of the saint through the church while members of the Society and other churchgoers looked on.
After the service, everyone moved to the hall for coffee and Vasilopita, celebrating the New Year together. This gathering also marked the first general assembly of the year for “Omonia.” A key topic of discussion was the upcoming “Tsipourovrathia” dance, scheduled for February 18, 2012, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. The meeting wrapped up with the traditional cutting of the Vasilopita, and each member received a piece of the holiday bread. President Kostas Kravaris of the “Omonia” Society was interviewed about the chapter’s events and the upcoming Tsipourovrathia.
