Upper Darby, PA – Holiday Cheer and Competitive Fire Mark PGBL’s Return
The PGBL returned from the holiday break this Sunday, and while the action on the court started off quietly, the energy around St. Demetrios was unmistakable. The snack bar reopened (yes, the spanakopita was as good as ever), holiday cookies made their way to the scorer’s table courtesy of the referees, and warm Chronia Polla greetings were exchanged. Let’s just say a few post-holiday bellies were noticeable — but the basketball didn’t miss a beat.
Game 1: Sixers 48 – Warriors 43
The night kicked off with a battle full of history and familiar faces. The Sixers and Warriors share deep roots, with many players having once played together in GOYA at St. Demetrios. On this night, it was “big brother vs. little brother,” and experience won out. The Sixers, last year’s champions, played with poise and control, even without some of their key players. The younger Warriors fought hard but came up just short in a tight, defensive contest.
Game 2: Rip City 59 – Spartans 39
This one featured two teams on different trajectories. The Spartans — formerly the Grizzlies — have come a long way in the past two seasons. They’re competitive, confident, and capable of pulling off upsets. But on this night, Rip City made a statement. With their trademark fast pace and lethal outside shooting, they dismantled the Spartans from start to finish. The phrase “No Fear” might as well be their team motto, and they once again proved they can hang with anyone.
Game 3: Danny’s Boys 50 – FOB 39
Can you say mismatch? On paper, yes. Danny’s Boys came in at 10–1, while the newly formed FOB stood at 0–11. But that doesn’t tell the whole story.
FOB continues to show heart and steady improvement each week — a familiar path for many first-year teams in the league, including the Spartans just a few seasons ago. They’re starting to find chemistry and are scoring more consistently. With continued effort, a first win seems closer than the standings suggest.
Danny’s Boys, meanwhile, are a powerhouse. Formed from the core of last year’s Spurs squad — which came close to a championship — they’ve added key talent like Pete Kathopoulos and are now firmly in the title conversation. Sunday’s matchup could have been a blowout, but Danny’s Boys eased off the gas, treating it more like a scrimmage while still securing the win.
As the second half of the season picks up, the playoff picture is coming into focus. But as always in the PGBL, anything can happen — and with each week, the competition only gets tougher. Spanakopita, basketball, and brotherhood. That’s Sunday night in Upper Darby.
