The PGBL is more than just a basketball league, and this past week they’ve proved that. The first of what should be many homeless feedings took place in Philadelphia this past Thursday night, with more than 20 volunteers coming out to help hand out everything from pasta and meat sauce to soup and sandwiches.
This feeding was the first function of the PGBL CARES program, which is led by Paul and Stella Fisfis. “The Fisfis family did a great job setting this up for us, and we look forward to their leadership in the future. I think we all want to be charitable but some of us don’t know how. Now we have an avenue to do that” says Bill Zonios, the Co-Commissioner of the PGBL.
The event took place at 18th and Vine, but the food preparation was done in the kitchen of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Upper Darby, PA. Over 300 sandwiches, 120 boiled eggs, 10 lbs of pasta and meat were prepared the night before the feeding by several PGBL players and volunteers.
