BROOMALL, PA — Opening day set the tone early for the GOYA basketball season, with St. Thomas traveling to Broomall and coming away with two decisive wins over St. Luke in both the girls and boys varsity matchups.
Across both games, the difference was clear. St. Thomas played with control, converted opportunities, and dictated the pace.
Girls Game

St. Thomas’ girls relied on speed and discipline to take control from the start.
Led by coach John Pratsinakis, they turned defensive pressure into points, consistently converting fast-break opportunities. The two teams matched up well physically, and both were willing to run the floor, but St. Thomas made better use of its chances.
With just eight players, St. Thomas built a 12–4 lead by halftime, capitalizing on turnovers and controlling tempo. St. Luke showed flashes of pace but struggled to finish around the basket.
The second half removed any doubt. St. Thomas tightened defensively, allowing just one additional basket, while continuing to extend the lead through transition play.
Boys Game

The boys game opened evenly, with both teams trading baskets through the first quarter.
St. Luke leaned on quickness and perimeter shooting, while St. Thomas worked inside, using its size and experience. The game remained close early, tied at 8–8, before turning midway through the second quarter.
Turnovers began to shift momentum. St. Thomas converted them into points and gradually pulled away, taking a 19–12 lead into halftime. St. Luke’s outside shots, particularly from three-point range, were not falling, making it difficult to keep pace.
The decisive stretch came in the third quarter. St. Thomas controlled the boards and extended the lead to 18 points, effectively breaking the game open.
A late full-court press from St. Luke created a brief push, with a few three-pointers cutting the deficit, but it didn’t last. Once St. Thomas returned its starters to the floor, the gap widened again and the result was settled.
A Clear Opening Statement
For St. Thomas, it was more than just two wins. It was a controlled, confident start to the season on both sides.
For St. Luke, the opening games showed effort and flashes of potential, but also the areas that will need to improve as the season continues.
