Cherry Hill, NJ – This past weekend, Greek Restaurant Kuzina by Sofia closed its doors for the final time. A sad moment for the community and especially for Greeks who many called it the best Greek restaurant in the Delaware Valley.
Kuzina by Sofia opened in September of 2007 in Sawmill Village, Cherry Hill, NJ, and immediately became the home for Greeks who loved the traditional atmosphere and authentic quality. Previously, the restaurant was known as Athens Cafe.
Sofia and Assad Khoury owners who managed and prepared the food at the restaurant were more like your Greek family members who hosted great moments and meals for all their friends. They checked on you throughout the evening and explained the history of the food, and even spent time sitting at your table catching up on your life. All in a place that provided live Greek music on weekends as well. This gem was not hidden though, it shined and attracted Greek food lovers from all over the Philadelphia metropolitan.
This was the second time that the Khourys filed for bankruptcy protection, and released a note to its customers that the decision, this time, was to close for a final time. The Khourys added that they would continue working in the Greek food business by focusing on the catering and wholesale. They had also established a name by hosting monthly themed dinners at the Potato Homestead Farm in Sewell and were a vibrant part of the South Jersey scene. You could even get their food at Camden Riversharks baseball games and at Whole Foods.
We at Cosmos Philly featured Kuzina by Sofia on many occasions throughout the years and regarded them as friends. We hope to see them out on the scene soon and wish them luck in their new endeavors.
The final note on their Facebook page read, “A decision made a few weeks ago to close and sell the restaurant business comes to fruition today. We so gratefully thank All our Customers and Friends for Nine Fabulous Years of unconditional support and patronage. Sofia looks forward to servicing you all as she continues with her catering adventure serving as always the best in fresh and authentic Greek and Mediterranean Cuisine.”
UPDATE
We received the following statement from Assad Khoury: “The restaurant closed because we sold to another restaurant, not because of a bankruptcy filing. Sofia is moving on with catering and wholesale.”
