Media, PA – The flaky and hot sweet galaktobouriko was perfect this weekend at the St. George, “Taste of Greece” festival. Saying it may be difficult, but having just one slice is even harder. The homemade custard and honey pastry was selling in the sweet section both inside the church hall and under the main tent as you entered. And if those two stations of sweets weren’t enough, loukoumades and coffee sold by the Greek school students under the tent as well, were the perfect sidekick dish while watching the live entertainment – traditional Greek dancing.
St. George’s own dance troupes performed various dances from Greece throughout the weekend. Three troupes, varying in ages, from 5 to 18, reminded the guests and attendees, that the St. George Greek Orthodox community is a place that links the generations. Other dance troupes, including Philadelphia’s own Pan Macedonians, performed as well. And a special treat-performance by the Hellenic Golden Coins of St. Nicholas of Baltimore Maryland added a different atmosphere to the event.
The Hellenic Golden Coins dance troupe made the trip up for the day, wowing the crowd under the big tent. The dance group is comprised of students ranging from thirteen years old to twenty-five years old. The Hellenic Golden Coins are the highlight of the St. Nicholas Greek Folk Festival held every year in June.
The annual festival features an assortment of Greek food, which attracts visitors to the oldest Greek Orthodox church in Delaware County. Sales go towards the preservation and upkeep of the church.
