Dr. George S. Ahtaridis was born and raised in Greece. After having received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, he arrived in Philadelphia in 1972. Philadelphia was supposed to be a place to come and advance his studies in medicine, and then, eventually return home. Fortunately, not only for the Greek-American community in the Delaware Valley, but for the community at large, Dr. George, as he is affectionately known, did not return home to Greece, and he and his wife, Sofia, made the Philadelphia area their home for the next forty-five years.
He completed a required residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Pennsylvania. He then became Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and practiced medicine at Graduate Hospital and at the University of Pennsylvania for more than forty years.
He also became active in the Greek-American community that embraced him. He held various positions in the Greek societies, including, president of the Federation of the Hellenic American Societies of Philadelphia and Delaware Valley, president of the Pan-Macedonian Chapter of Philadelphia, Pavlos Melas, and supreme president of Pan-Macedonian Association.
He was also Chairman of the committee to organize demonstrations in New York and Washington, DC regarding the Macedonian Issue, was a member of the Hellenic American National Committee (HANC), Council for Greeks Abroad (ΣΑΕ) in 1996, and served as a board member of St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and St. Lukes Greek Orthodox Church on Broomall, Pennsylvania.
Dr. George has authored multiple medical papers published in journals and books and is a founder of the Hellenic Medical Society of Philadelphia. He retired from active practice in 2016.
