When you ask Greek-Americans why they return to Greece year after year, their answers rarely sound like statistics. They talk about the sea, the food, the quiet joy of walking through their grandparents’ village, and the feeling that settles in the moment the plane touches down in Athens.
Yet the data tells a similar story. Europe, and Greece in particular, continues to represent something steady in an unsettled world.
According to the European Travel Commission’s Long-Haul Travel Barometer 1/2025, 44 percent of respondents in key overseas markets plan to visit Europe this year, down from 49 percent in 2024. The decline is most visible in the United States, where sentiment has softened amid concerns over affordability. Even so, interest remains strong, placing Europe among the most desirable long-haul destinations worldwide.
The same report confirms that Europe is considered the world’s safest travel region, leading on political stability, personal security, and reliable infrastructure. Safety, iconic landmarks, and well-developed facilities remain the top reasons travelers choose European destinations.
Despite higher costs, Americans continue to prioritize experiences over possessions. For many Greek-Americans, the choice to travel to Greece is about more than tourism. It is about belonging, family, and the comfort of returning to a place that still feels familiar.
Across other markets, travel patterns vary. Interest from China has grown to 61 percent, while Canada remains stable at 48 percent. The global picture shows that travelers everywhere are weighing cost and safety more carefully, yet Europe’s mix of stability and culture keeps it high on the list.
Miguel Sanz, president of the European Travel Commission, notes that “safety and stability remain Europe’s strongest advantages in an uncertain world.” For Greek-Americans, that sense of stability carries a personal weight—the knowledge that even as the world shifts, Greece remains a constant.
Affordability is still the main obstacle. Nearly half of travelers not planning a European trip cite cost as the key barrier, especially younger generations balancing limited vacation time and tighter budgets. Still, many Americans are finding ways to make it work, often combining their trips with family visits or regional travel through Italy, Spain, or Cyprus.
In Greece, U.S. arrivals have reached record levels, topping 1.4 million visitors in 2024, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority. These travelers are now exploring beyond Athens and the islands, heading to regions like the Peloponnese, Epirus, and Crete, where many Greek-American families trace their roots.
Perhaps that is what keeps drawing Americans, and especially Greek-Americans, back, not only the safety or the beauty, but the feeling that in uncertain times there is still a place that feels grounded, familiar, and real.
For many, that place is Greece.
