Angeliki “Angela” I. Balis, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and longtime member of the Greek-American community in South Jersey, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026. She was 89.
Born Angeliki Konstantinopoulos on November 30, 1936, in Kentriki, Greece, she lived a life closely tied to her family, her church, and the people around her. She was remembered for her warmth, her strength, and the steady care she gave to those around her.
Her home was always open. Over the years, Angeliki welcomed relatives who came to the United States for school, work, or the process of becoming citizens. She gave them a place to stay, helped them get settled, and offered the kind of support that made a new country feel less unfamiliar.
Angeliki was deeply connected to St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where she volunteered each year at the church’s Agora. She was also a member of the Daughters of Penelope and the Philoptochos Society, giving her time to the church and community that were part of her everyday life.
Her grandchildren were especially close to her. She was there for milestones, celebrations, and ordinary family moments, offering love, advice, and encouragement as they grew. Her family remembers how much joy she took in being near them and watching their lives unfold.
Angeliki was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Balis, and her parents, Lambros and Aglaia Konstantinopoulos.
She is survived by her son, William Balis of Mullica Hill, New Jersey, and his wife, Connie, and their children, Yiannis and Angelina; her daughter, Elizabeth Fifis of Lumberton, New Jersey, and her husband, Christopher, and their children, Violetta and Demetrios; and her daughter, Liaza Prussel of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, and her husband, Adam, and their son, Jonathan. She is also survived by her sister, Yiota Chiras of Patras, Greece, and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family expressed gratitude to the staff at Brandall Estates in Linwood, New Jersey, for the care they provided Angeliki, and to Debbie Grissler and Samaritan Hospice for their compassionate support.
A viewing was held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, followed by funeral services. Interment took place at Locustwood Memorial Park in Cherry Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to Samaritan Hospice.
