Aphrodite “Afro” Nazirides, 94, of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Born Aphrodite Andreadis on May 15, 1932, she spent her childhood in her homeland of Serres, Macedonia, Greece. She immigrated to Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1957 with her late husband, Avgitas, and spent the rest of her life devoted to their six children.
Afro was a longtime member and volunteer at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Her heritage remained essential to her throughout her life, especially through the time she spent cooking for her family, close friends, and the many visitors who were a constant presence in her home.
She was also a driving force in the family’s successful restaurant business for 25 years. Her guiding principles were shaped by philoxenia, the Greek concept of hospitality, which she lived every day through her love for her family, service to her community, and embrace of the blend of Hellenic and American cultures.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, Avgitas, and her son, Angelo, Afro is survived by her children, Chrisoula, Nicholas and his wife, Argie, Michael, Lou and his wife, Desanne, and Marianthe and her husband, John. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Eleni Nazirides, Nicoletta Nazirides, Bobby Geroulanos, Nicholas Geroulanos, Evan Geroulanos, and Michael Nazirides.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2026, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 30 East Forge Road, Media, Pennsylvania. Relatives and friends may visit at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Chester Rural Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to St. George Greek Orthodox Church would be appreciated.
