Archbishop Apostolos of Canada will be enthroned Saturday, September 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3840 Finch Avenue East in Toronto.
Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by August 20 at office@goarchdiocese.ca, according to the invitation.
The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously elected Apostolos on July 22 after accepting Archbishop Sotirios’ resignation from active service. Apostolos was serving as Metropolitan of New Jersey at the time.
Apostolos began overseeing the metropolis’ liturgical and pastoral life in February 2021 and was elected Metropolitan of New Jersey in July 2023.
In his first encyclical to the clergy and faithful of Canada, Apostolos said he was preparing for his arrival and official enthronement on September 19. He called for unity during the transition and paid tribute to Archbishop Sotirios’ decades of service to the Church in Canada.
Born Evangelos Koufallakis on Rhodes, Apostolos studied pastoral and social theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and earned a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Boston University. His ministry in the United States included assignments in Massachusetts, New York, and California before his election as Bishop of Medeia in 2014. He later served the Metropolis of New Jersey, first as the bishop responsible for its pastoral life and then as metropolitan.
The enthronement will mark Apostolos’ transition from more than five years of service in the Metropolis of New Jersey to the leadership of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada.
