CineΕλλάδα: A Journey Through Greek Cinema Begins in Chicago

The Consulate General of Greece in Chicago has launched CineΕλλάδα, a new cultural initiative dedicated to celebrating the richness and creativity of contemporary Greek cinema.

Created in collaboration with the Pickwick Theatre, the Hellenic Film Society USA, and the Hellenic Foundation Chicago, CineΕλλάδα invites audiences to experience one acclaimed Greek film each month. The series offers a fresh look at the artistry, humor, and humanity of modern Greece, connecting film lovers in Chicago to the country’s evolving creative landscape.

The opening screening takes place on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 7:00 PM, featuring “UTOPOLIS” (2024) at the historic Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge, Illinois, in the Mega Theater. Admission is free, with registration required through Eventbrite.

A Film About Understanding and Change

The first film in the series, UTOPOLIS (2024), directed by Vladimir Subotic and co-written with Maja Todorovic, tells the story of Yiannis (played by Makis Papadimitriou), a disillusioned Greek man who blames refugees for his own misfortunes, and Timur (portrayed by Goran Bogdan), a refugee he follows through the streets of an unnamed city. Over the course of one long night, their silent antagonism turns into an uneasy confrontation, forcing both men to face their fears and prejudices.

Set within a decaying urban landscape that mirrors Greece’s social tensions, the film captures a society caught between compassion and mistrust. Subotic’s direction emphasizes stillness and tension, using long takes and subdued lighting to portray the slow unraveling of human barriers. What begins as a pursuit driven by resentment becomes a shared struggle for survival and, ultimately, for understanding.

The ensemble cast includes Evi Dovelou, Argyris Gaganis, and Andreas Konstantinou, adding depth to the film’s atmosphere of uncertainty and fragile hope. Produced by Avaton Films and Deal Productions, UTOPOLIS premiered in Greece in November 2024 and has drawn attention at European festivals for its realism, emotional restraint, and striking visual composition.

Critics have praised the film’s honesty and social relevance, describing it as a reflection of the moral and cultural crossroads faced by modern Europe. In the spirit of the Greek “New Wave” movement that gained international recognition in the past decade, UTOPOLIS continues the country’s tradition of bold, thought-provoking cinema.

UTOPOLIS reflects the new generation of Greek filmmakers who explore contemporary life with authenticity and cinematic daring.

Building Bridges Through Cinema

CineΕλλάδα is more than a film series. It is a bridge between Greece and the Greek-American community of Chicago. By presenting modern Greek stories that speak to universal experiences, the Consulate aims to strengthen cultural understanding and encourage dialogue through art.

Each monthly screening will introduce a new perspective on Greece, its people, its humor, its contradictions, and its hope. The series will continue through 2026 and will culminate in the Greek Film Expo, organized by the Hellenic Film Society USA, one of the most active promoters of Greek cinema abroad.

“Cinema has always been a bridge between Greece and its diaspora,” notes the Consulate. “CineΕλλάδα gives that bridge a new voice.”
