Greek cinema returns to the Chicago area this month as the Consulate General of Greece in Chicago presents the next film in its ongoing cultural initiative CineΕλλάδα. The December screening features The Christmas Tango (Τάνγκο των Χριστουγέννων), which will be shown on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at 7 pm at the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge. Admission is free with registration.

Presented in collaboration with Hellenic Film Society USA, the Pickwick Theatre, and the Hellenic Foundation, CineΕλλάδα screens one Greek film each month and invites local audiences to explore a range of contemporary stories from Greece.

A Story Set Against a Christmas Night in the 1960s

Released in 2011, The Christmas Tango takes place in an isolated army camp in the late 1960s during the holiday season. The plot follows four people whose lives intersect when a young lieutenant secretly learns the tango so he can invite the colonel’s wife to dance. What begins as a hopeful gesture slowly reveals unspoken emotions and private struggles within the camp.

The film is framed by a present-day conversation between a young man and the now 65-year-old Lazaros Lazarou on Christmas Day. Through this meeting, past decisions and long-held secrets come into view, showing how one night can leave a lasting imprint.

A Cultural Initiative for Chicago

CineΕλλάδα is part of the Consulate’s broader effort to highlight Greek culture in the Chicago area through regular film screenings. Organized with the support of the Pickwick Theatre, the Hellenic Film Society USA, and the Hellenic Foundation, the program showcases a different Greek film each month and contributes to the lead-up to the next Greek Film Expo in 2026.

This December screening closes the 2025 program with a film that blends memory, emotion, and the quiet significance of one Christmas night. For audiences interested in Greek cinema or simply looking for a thoughtful story to mark the season, The Christmas Tango offers a meaningful evening at the Pickwick.
