The Greek-American community of Chester County is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and beloved members, Demetrios (Meme) Stavros Stavropoulos, who passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 91.

Born on July 18, 1934, in Elaiohorion, Achaia, Greece, Meme left his village as a teenager and arrived in America through Ellis Island, carrying little more than hope and determination. He attended West Chester Junior High and Malvern Preparatory School before joining his uncle in the restaurant business—a step that would lead to a lifetime of hard work, hospitality, and community service.

Together with his brother Bill, Meme opened DeStarr’s Family Restaurant, which became a cornerstone of West Chester for over 40 years. More than just a restaurant, DeStarr’s was a gathering place—a spot where neighbors caught up, families celebrated, and visitors felt at home. The brothers’ generosity and kindness helped shape the character of downtown West Chester and inspired a new generation of local restaurateurs.

During a visit to Greece in the early 1960s, Meme met Dina, the love of his life, in Patras. They married soon after and returned to West Chester in 1963, where they built a life rooted in faith, family, and service. Married for 62 years, they raised three children and were blessed with four grandchildren, whose lives they filled with love, laughter, and the values of their heritage.

A man of deep faith, Meme was a dedicated member of St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church in Broomall. He served on the Parish Council and chaired the church’s Greek Affair festival, where his famous lamb shank recipe became a cherished tradition. He also worked to restore Agios Nikolaos, the small church in his home village in Greece, ensuring that its doors would remain open for future generations.

Meme’s sense of duty extended beyond the church, as a proud and active member of the AHEPA Chapter of Chester County. He served as president and was honored earlier this year with the Life Member Award of the Order of AHEPA, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to Hellenism and philanthropy.

Those who knew Meme remember him for his infectious laugh, warm smile, and generous heart. He never hesitated to help someone in need and believed deeply in giving back to the community that had welcomed him. His contributions were recognized by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, but his true reward was the friendship and respect of all who knew him.

A proud American, Meme never missed an election and wore his “I Voted” sticker with pride. He was a loyal Phillies fan, a collector of baseball caps, and an enthusiastic gardener who found joy in sunshine, laughter, and good company. He loved cooking, Westerns, and any excuse to gather his family around the table.

He is survived by his devoted wife Dina, his children Evdokia (Chris) Blazakis, Maria (George) Spyropoulos, and Stavros (Laura) Stavropoulos, and his grandchildren Niko (Amelia), Dina, John, and Demetri. He is also survived by his siblings, Gerasimos Stavropoulos and Fotini Ventouri of Greece. He was preceded in death by his brothers Bill and John Stavropoulos.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church, 35 N. Malin Road, Broomall, PA, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church.

Demetrios “Meme” Stavropoulos lived with faith, generosity, and love for others. May his memory be eternal.
