The first phase of the Ellinikon Sports Park opened to the public on July 20, turning part of the former Athens international airport site into a new destination for athletics and recreation.
The complex includes an outdoor track and throwing field with seating for 1,070 spectators, four 11-a-side football fields, two basketball courts, two tennis courts and open areas for exercise. A 124-room guesthouse provides accommodations for athletes.
Covering 287,000 square meters, the site includes 115,000 square meters of landscaped and open green space. Pedestrian and cycling areas, children’s recreation spaces, four food and beverage locations and areas for events are also available.
Before the public opening, the Sports Park hosted the EKO Super Special Stage of the 2026 Acropolis Rally, drawing thousands of spectators to the site.
Admission is free, although some organized activities, sports programs and special events may require registration or a fee. Visitors also have access to 1,350 free parking spaces, along with wheelchair-accessible paths, ramps and restrooms.
Current operating hours are 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The official visitor information lists expanded hours beginning in September, from 8 a.m. to midnight, with operations 362 days a year. Individual sports facilities may follow different schedules.
The Sports Park is the first major project in the Ellinikon redevelopment to be progressively delivered to the public. It forms part of the planned Ellinikon Park, a 2-million-square-meter metropolitan park that remains under development.
