Upper Darby, PA – On a Martin Luther King Monday, when most of us were remembering the famed civil rights leader, three GOYA match ups were being played out at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
Game one featured two undefeated (B) teams, St. Demetrios and St. Luke boys. The game stayed fairly close the first half, which St. Demetrios led 21-14. But the second half of the game was all St. Demetrios. St. Lukes tried to run the ball the first half and then worked a full court press. But scoring no points in the 3rd period and to many missed shots hurt them. St. Demetrios on the other hand, shot the ball well and pulled down rebounds. Final score, St. Demetrios 47, St. Luke 20
In game two, St. Demetrios and St. Lukes (girls) met up for what turned out to be a 2 point game. It was also a critical for St. Lukes girls. With an win, they would make it to the playoffs. Both teams played tough in the 1st half. St. Luke led 15-10. they built up to an 8 point lead in the second half, but St. Demetrios fought back. A lot of late pressure and rebounds kept St. Demetrios in the game and pulled them with in one bucket in the final minute. They had a few chances to win, but they shot at their own basket, not once, but twice in less than a few seconds. Fortunately they didn’t score on themselves, but the confusion continued till the buzzer sounded, giving St. Luke the victory. Final score, St. Luke 24, St. Demetrios 22.
Game three was also a make or break game for the St. Lukes boys. By beating the St. Demetrios boys by 16 points they could secure a playoff spot. Although they won, the dream was not to be. both teams played a tough 1st half and St. Luke led by a score of 16-12. St. Demetrios managed to control the boards and drive to the basket the second half at will, while St. Luke found their outside shooting kept them in the lead. They managed to pull out the close game but failed to make the playoffs due to their victory only being by 6 points. Final score, St. Luke, 38, St. Demetrios 32.
