In July 2024, somewhere above the Red Sea, a Greek navy frigate locked onto an incoming drone. It wasn’t the first drone that day, and it wouldn’t be the last, but this one was handled fast. There was no missile launch. The system relied on electronic jamming to interfere with the drone’s signal and stop it in flight.
The ship was the Psara. The weapon was a system called Centaurus, designed, built, and deployed by Greece. And it worked.
That might surprise people who don’t follow Greek defense news. Greece isn’t usually mentioned in conversations about advanced military technology. But that’s starting to change. Centaurus is now being called Europe’s only battle-tested anti-drone system. It doesn’t destroy drones in the traditional sense. Instead, it disables them by cutting off their communications and navigation. It’s precise, quiet, and built to counter the kinds of drones that have become a constant threat in modern warfare.
The system can detect drones from up to 150 kilometers away and disable them at 25. It uses passive detection, which means it operates without revealing the ship’s position. For a system developed entirely in Greece, it represents a major technical achievement.
Its first real test came during Operation Aspides, the European Union’s naval mission to protect shipping routes in the Red Sea. Greece wasn’t just participating in the mission. It was leading it, with the operation’s command center based in Larissa. When Houthi drones launched from Yemen approached the Psara, Centaurus was activated. At least two drones were intercepted, with some reports suggesting as many as four were engaged in total. Some were brought down. Others turned back. No allied vessels were hit.
This was not a demonstration or a drill. It was a real combat engagement, carried out under pressure in one of the world’s most dangerous maritime regions. The system did what it was designed to do.
That success is part of a larger shift in Greek defense strategy. For decades, the country has relied on imported systems, from French fighter jets to American radars and German submarines. That model is now evolving. Between now and 2036, Greece plans to invest up to 30 billion euros in defense modernization. A growing part of that spending is focused on developing systems within the country itself. Centaurus is one example. Others include the upcoming Achilles Shield air defense network and Greece’s first surveillance drone, the Archytas.
These projects are not isolated. They are part of a national effort to build long-term technical expertise, reduce dependency on imports, and grow a capable domestic defense sector.
Behind Centaurus is a team of Greek engineers and specialists who have worked steadily over the past several years to move the program from concept to deployment. One of them is Kyriakos Enotiadis, the electronics director at Hellenic Aerospace Industry. Another is Pantelis Tzortzakis, head of the Hellenic Centre for Defence Innovation, who is overseeing 800 million euros in national investment toward research and new defense technologies. His agency sees Centaurus not as a one-off but as a first step in a much larger process.
Also involved is Nikos Koklas, a lead engineer on the Archytas drone project. His work connects systems like Centaurus to a broader national defense plan that includes both aerial and naval capabilities. The goal is not simply to build tools that work today but to prepare for long-term independence and innovation in a rapidly shifting global landscape.
That momentum isn’t limited to the public sector. Companies like Altus LSA, now developing export-grade ISR drones in partnership with French defense firms, show that this wave of innovation is reaching further. Greece’s defense industry is moving outward, with exports already reaching five countries.
Centaurus is not the only example. Across the country, Greek companies are designing and exporting advanced unmanned systems that are being deployed from South Korea to Ukraine to the United States. From the AI-driven ATLAS-8 drone built by ALTUS in Crete to autonomous surveillance towers developed in Athens, Greece’s private sector is quietly gaining global ground.

It’s a reminder of what Greece can do when it backs its own people and ideas and makes the decision to lead.
Centaurus is just one example. And it may not be the last.
