Legendary Greek singer Haris Alexiou was warmly received by fans in Israel last week as she and Tel Aviv’s Philharmonic Orchestra put on two spectacular shows at the Mann Theater on June 26 and 27.

Alexiou received a long standing ovation from the audience before treating them to a performance of her famous ballads before she embarks on a summer tour across Greece this July.

She first visited the country 22 years ago and has a long relationship with the country. Many of her songs have been translated into Hebrew. What’s more, Greek-originated musician Yuda Poliker has helped make those songs popular in Israel, which has led to her sizeable popularity among Israelis. At the performance, Alexiou offered public thanks to him.

During the show she sang two songs in Hebrew, which brought out an especially emotional response from the audience. Afterwards, the Orchestra maestro Andreas Pilarinos spoke glowingly about the singer, calling the performances “a unique combination of Greek character and excellent music interpretation”.
