Philadelphia, PA – James G. Prinos, a prominent figure in Philadelphia’s Greek-American community and a dedicated leader in cultural preservation, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, surrounded by family. He was 83.

Known affectionately as Jim, he was the beloved husband of Evangelia Prinos (nee Kostalas) and a devoted father to Ageliki (Winnie), Lenia, Joanna Chonofsky (Anthony), and the late George J. He was also a proud grandfather to Evagelia, Demetrios, Melina, Adrianna, Ashlyn, Kadence, Cameron, and Arryn.

Jim’s life was marked by his unwavering passion for Greek culture and Orthodox faith. As a young boy, he served as an altar boy at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, a community that would remain central to his life. Later, he served on the parish council, where his leadership contributed to the church’s growth and outreach.

He was also a past president of the Chios Society of Philadelphia, where he championed the culture of his ancestral home. “Jim was the heart of our community, always there with a story about Greece or a helping hand,” said a fellow member of the society. He took great joy in sharing lessons about Greek history and independence, ensuring the stories of his heritage resonated with everyone he met.

Relatives and friends are invited to honor his life at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 256 S. 8th St., Philadelphia, PA 19107, on Friday, January 3rd. A viewing will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest at Lawnview Cemetery.

Contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral to honor his dedication to faith and community.

James Prinos will be remembered as a devoted family man, a leader in the Greek-American community, and a kind and generous soul who touched the lives of all who knew him. His legacy of love and service will inspire generations to come. May his memory be eternal.
