John A. Koninis Sr., a Greek-American business owner known to many as the “Flooring Doctor” and a longtime presence in Wilmington’s community, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026. He was 91.
He was born on July 7, 1934, in Newton, New Jersey, to Konstantinos Koninis of Tirnavos and Demetria Koninis of Sparta. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School before serving in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958 in the years following the Korean War, where he worked in personnel aboard the USS New Jersey.
After returning home, he met Anastasia Mallis at a dance at St. George Cathedral in Philadelphia. They married in 1958 and began building their life together in New Jersey, raising their family over the years that followed.
He spent his early working years in the restaurant business before joining his cousin, Manuel Sturgis, at Raritan Liquors in Bernardsville. In 1975, he moved to Delaware and started his own company, Floor Coverings Unlimited. Over more than five decades, he became a familiar figure to customers across the area, known for his steady approach, his honesty, and his willingness to help people find what they needed. The nickname “Flooring Doctor” stayed with him for a reason.
His connection to the Greek-American community remained a constant throughout his life. He was an active member of the Order of AHEPA, serving with Wilmington’s Chapter 95 and later at the district level representing Delaware and New Jersey. He was also among the founding members of Odyssey Charter School, a role he took particular pride in as the school became a lasting part of the local community.
Outside of work, he stayed involved in several organizations, including the Lions Club of Chadds Ford, where he was a member, and as a 23rd Degree Mason. When he stepped away from his daily routines, he preferred to be outdoors, spending time hunting, fishing, or on the golf course.
Those who knew him remember a man who cared deeply for his family and carried a sense of humor that showed itself in his own way. It could be a little gruff at times, but it was unmistakably his.
He is survived by his wife, Anastasia; his son, John A. Koninis II; his granddaughter, Alexandra; his sister-in-law, Jennie Mallis; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He also leaves behind the family’s dog, Benny. He was preceded in death by his daughters, Konnie and Christina; his brother, Paul; his sister, Ana Millionas; and several close family members and lifelong friends.
A viewing will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 808 N. Broom Street in Wilmington, followed by the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Silverbrook Cemetery.
In place of flowers, donations may be made to the Wilmington AHEPA Chapter 95 Scholarship Fund.
For many, he will be remembered through the work he stood behind, the community he stayed close to, and the family that remained at the center of his life.
