Upper Darby, PA – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Onassis. This past Saturday morning, John Onassis, a longtime member of the St. Demetrios community, passed away. John Onassis (July 26, 1930 – November 8, 2014) is survived by his wife Betty Onassis, daughter Fotini Onassis, and grandson Yianni.
Husband and father, John Onassis was a member of several organizations, including AHEPA chapter 445. Born in Piraeus, Greece, he immigrated to the US in 1961. He was married to Betty Anderson and raised one child, Fotini.
He was a presence in the community that embodied tradition, respect, and love of Hellenism. Frank and to the point, Onassis will be missed. He also sang at St. Demetrios and served on the church board. In his self-described historic video interview recorded by Cosmos Philly, ‘The Last Rebeti,’ Onassis recalls his life and love of Rebetika music.
