‘King Otto’ to Screen in Greenport on Sept. 4

Greek national team players lift the trophy after winning Euro 2004.
Greece’s national team celebrates its Euro 2004 championship, the unlikely title run chronicled in the documentary King Otto.

King Otto, the documentary about Greece’s unexpected triumph at Euro 2004 under coach Otto Rehhagel, will screen Friday, September 4, at the Sapan Greenport Theater in Greenport, New York. The screening begins at 7 p.m., and tickets are $30.

The Labor Day weekend screening is being held at the North Fork Arts Center in collaboration with the Hellenic Film Society. The theater is located at 211 Front Street in Greenport. The Hellenic Film Society says the film will be shown with English subtitles.

Directed by Christopher André Marks, King Otto follows Rehhagel’s arrival in Greece and his relationship with a national team that went on to win its first European Championship in 2004. The film also examines how the German coach and his Greek players learned to work together during the run to the title.

Greece entered Euro 2004 without a victory at a major international tournament. Rehhagel’s side defeated host Portugal 2-1 in the opening match, then faced Portugal again in the final in Lisbon on July 4. Angelos Charisteas scored in the 57th minute of the 1-0 victory that made Greece European champion.
