For Chians in Philadelphia, November always carries a quiet sense of pride. It marks the month their island was freed during the First Balkan War in 1912, a turning point that shaped families and the stories they carried with them to America.
This Sunday, the United Chios Society of Philadelphia “Koraes” Chapter 16 will gather at Annunciation–Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church in Elkins Park for a memorial service marking the 113th anniversary of the Liberation of Chios. Orthros begins at 8:30 am, followed by the Divine Liturgy at 9:30 am and the memorial afterward.
For many, this annual gathering is less about ceremony and more about memory. It’s a moment to think of grandparents who left small villages for a new life, and of the island traditions they kept alive here in Philadelphia. The Chian community has been part of the region for generations, and anniversaries like this remind them of where that story began.
The service is open to anyone who wishes to take part, whether they have roots on the island or simply appreciate the history that shaped the Greek American experience.
