Maria (Papaspyridakou) Caravasos, known to family and friends as Mary, passed away on September 21, 2026, at the age of 88. Born in Sparta, Greece, she studied and practiced law in Athens before moving to the United States.
Caravasos was born June 9, 1938, and grew up in central Sparta near the Greek Orthodox Church of Agios Nikonos. Her childhood was shaped in part by World War II. Her family recalled that her father once prevented German soldiers from entering their home by telling them the household was under quarantine for typhus.
She excelled in school and also competed as a high jumper in her youth. Caravasos later attended the University of Athens, where she earned her law degree, and practiced law in Athens. After moving to the United States, she also took postgraduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
She came to the United States after marrying her childhood friend, Nikolaos “Nick” Caravasos, an aerospace engineer who spent much of his career with Boeing.
For more than five decades, the couple divided their lives between the United States and long summer stays in Greece. They traveled widely among the Greek islands before Chios became a second home. Greek language and culture were also central to the upbringing of their daughter, NiaLena.
Caravasos closely followed politics and public affairs in Greece, the United States, and abroad. Her family remembered her as someone who held firm views and was never reluctant to debate them.
Family was at the center of her life. She created her daughter’s name, NiaLena, by combining the names of her two grandmothers. NiaLena Caravasos later became a federal white-collar criminal defense attorney in Philadelphia.
Caravasos remained connected to her Greek Orthodox faith in her final days. Her family said she streamed services from the Church of the Archangels in Mantamados and spent her final hours at home listening to Greek music, including songs by Stelios Kazantzidis and Manos Loizos, with her daughter beside her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Nick; her parents, Eleni and Periklis Papaspyridakos; and her brother, Vasilis “Lakis” Papaspyridakos. She is survived by her daughter, NiaLena Caravasos, and her niece, Elena, who lives in Athens.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, September 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, 35 N. Malin Road in Broomall. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Broomall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center at Riddle Hospital through the Riddle HealthCare Foundation. Donors are asked to indicate that their gift is in memory of Maria Caravasos and designated for the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center.
