Mary Liounis, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and cherished member of the Greek-American community, fell asleep in the Lord on October 4, 2025, in Toms River, New Jersey. She was 82.
Born Marianthi Panagiota Theodorellis on April 4, 1943, to Cleopatra and Panagiotis Theodorellis in the village of Kalloni on the island of Mytilene in Greece, Mary knew both joy and hardship in her early years. Those experiences strengthened her faith in God and shaped the character everyone knew. She carried herself with resilience, a strong work ethic, determination, and a quiet self-reliance that guided her through life.
At sixteen, Mary immigrated to the United States and joined her mother in Brooklyn. She graduated from Bay Ridge High School and built a life rooted in family and hard work. She opened her own hair salon in Brooklyn, a business she was proud of because it helped her provide for the home and children she adored.
Mary retired to Toms River two decades ago and never lost her energy for living. She tended her garden, welcomed friends and family around her table, and brought people together with warmth and good food. Music was always nearby. She loved to sing and dance to Greek songs and kept that joy even in her later years. Those who knew her will remember her loving spirit, her ready humor, and a life lived fully and faithfully.
Mary is survived by her children, Lauren Liounis and Peter Liounis, and by her husband, George Liounis. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Demetrius Ellis and his wife Irene, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by her brothers Christopher Theodorellis and Peter Spathis. She will be deeply missed by her many cousins, nephews, and nieces in the Theodorellis/Ellis, Liounis, Gabriel, and Gelagotis/Kourouklis families, most of whom live in the greater New York City area.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Mary’s memory to Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Toms River.
