Metropolitan Apostolos Presides at Holy Thursday Liturgy in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DE — Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great on Thursday morning at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Wilmington. Holy Trinity is the Greek Orthodox cathedral in Delaware and serves a wider regional community beyond the city itself.

The service marked the morning liturgy of Holy Thursday, one of the central points of the Orthodox Church’s observance of Holy Week. According to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, Holy Thursday commemorates the Mystical Supper, including the institution of the Holy Eucharist, and the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil is appointed for that morning.

At Holy Trinity, clergy processed in and out of the altar, chanters carried the responses, and parishioners followed quietly from the pews as sections of the cathedral remained unfilled.

The Wilmington service was one stop in Metropolitan Apostolos’ Holy Week schedule, which placed him across multiple parishes in several states over the course of the week. Later the same day, he was scheduled to continue to St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill for the evening Service of the Lord’s Passion.

Holy Week services continue across the region through the Unnailing, the Lamentations, and the Paschal liturgies that follow, with the Metropolitan’s schedule tracing that progression from parish to parish.
