The smoke reached the parking lot before you even reached the door.

Outside The Mansion on Main Street in Voorhees, souvlakia hissed over open grills on Thursday night as the Nafpaktian & Perihora Society marked Tsiknopempti. Inside, the sound of Yianni Papastefanou & Orchestra carried through the hall and drew people toward the dance floor.

The band was already mid-song when the first circle began to form. It widened quickly. Friends joined hands. Someone stepped forward to lead. Others followed without hesitation.

Society President Bill Kalavourziotis, standing near the grills, gestured toward the souvlakia and said, “If you didn’t make it, this is what you’re missing out on.”

Founded in 1979 to preserve ties to Nafpaktos and the surrounding region, the Society has long built its calendar around gatherings like this. Tsiknopempti, now in its fifth year at the venue, has found its place among them.

Inside, the music kept moving. The circle tightened, loosened, then shifted again as one song gave way to the next.
